Collecting Wood Floor Samples

  1. Ask the homeowner if they have an extra piece of their wood floor in an attic or garage.
  2. If there is no extra piece available, ITEL recommends having either a contractor or flooring vendor take the sample.
  3. If you are not working with a contractor or flooring vendor, please collect the cleanest and least damaged sample from a low traffic area such as a closet or under raised furniture:
  • The sample should be cut to include a joining seam down the long side, as well as the seam across the short top or bottom of the plank. Be sure to read and follow all tool manufacturers' instructions and always wear safety glasses!
  • If the wood flooring is a glueless, tongue-and-groove product, an entire board may be able to be lifted up by removing the baseboard at an intersection of two perpendicular walls.
  • If the wood flooring is glued down, follow the glueless procedures above, realizing that the first board pulled up will most likely break apart. Additional boards will then be easier to remove.

Once you've collected the sample, fill out the ITEL Test Request Form.
