How to Collect a Ceramic or Stone Tile Sample

Before collecting samples, make sure to read the collection instructions. Ceramic and stone tiles can have sharp edges and may chip, crack or shatter during collection. Use safety goggles and heavy work gloves when collecting all samples. A flooring contractor can assist with sample collection.

  1. The recommended sample size is 6" x 6" or larger for cermaic or stone tile sample. If a full tile is smaller than 6" x 6", send a full size tile.
  2. Send the cleanest, least damaged piece you can find
  3. Remove the grout from all four sides of the tile with a grout saw.
  4. Using a wide chisel and hammer, tap the tile free from the adhesive by angling the chisel under the tile.
  5. Lift the tile carefully using the chisel, being careful to avoid sharp edges. If the tile cracks, make sure to send 6" x 6" or larger pieces for analysis. Also note the full size of the tile on the Test Request Form

Once you've collected the sample, fill out the ITEL Test Request Form.
